Our story

The Sylvia Rodger Institute carries forward Autism CRC's legacy, building on over a decade of evidence and collaboration to create equity and opportunity for autistic people.

Built on a legacy of impact

Established in 2013 under the Australian Government's Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) Program and transitioning to an independent post-CRC model in 2022, Autism CRC brought together autistic people, families, practitioners, service providers, governments, researchers and industry partners to become Australia's independent national source of evidence for best practice in relation to autism across the lifespan and the spectrum.

We translated evidence into nationally adopted guidelines, community platforms, professional learning and programs that informed policy, improved practice and supported better outcomes for autistic people, families and communities across Australia.

Through this work, we have created a strong evidence base, trusted relationships and extensive national and international partner networks.

Today, the Sylvia Rodger Institute continues that legacy.

The Sylvia Rodger Institute is named after Emeritus Professor Sylvia Rodger AM, a visionary whose work in occupational therapy, autism practice and inclusive research was recognised nationally and internationally.

Inclusion was simply Sylvia's way of being.

Sylvia co-founded Autism CRC and served as its founding CEO, changing the culture of autism research. Sylvia established an inclusive research environment that valued diverse perspectives and fostered collaboration between autistic people, families, researchers, practitioners and policymakers.

We continue to honour Sylvia's deep connection and commitment to inclusion, collaboration and best practice with the renaming of Autism CRC to the Sylvia Rodger Institute.

We bring together evidence, lived experience and professional expertise to create resources, programs and guidance that strengthen capability and support meaningful change.

As we look ahead, we are focused on expanding our impact, strengthening partnerships across communities and sectors, and continuing to work with autistic people to shape practical solutions that deliver meaningful and lasting impact.
